Mallory Kane delivers a sweet historical novella in September Rain.
"They slit his throat but he lived." That's what the townspeople said about the reclusive man they called Crazy Jake. When Jacob Chandler saved Hallie Greer from an attacker and was beaten half to death for his trouble, Hallie can't rest until she makes sure he's all right.
Hallie travels up a treacherous mountain trail to a treeline cabin. What she finds there is danger, mystery and love.

When Hallie realizes 'Crazy' Jake's injuries, inflicted when he saved her from an attacker, were not cared for before he returned home, she sets off to make sure he is alright.quite honestly, I was not impressed at all with this novella. Classified as a historical story, I struggled to place it anywhere in history. The repetition of certain phrases, such as Hallie's insistence that she is a spinster and too old to think about marriage at the age of 28, grated on my nerves. Plot-wise, it was rather predictable but sweet.
Just not my cup of tea, I suppose.

September Rain edition by Mallory Kane Romance eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed this short story it took me only a couple of hours to read and I'm sure I kept my husband awake with my sniffling. It would have worked so well as a full length story so much more depth and detail could have then been given. Enjoy
I read this book in one sitting. A short and engaging book. I enjoyed reading about Hallie and Jacob. They are so good for each other. It's a story about pain, friendship, romance and redemption. Highly recommended.
A very short, sweet romance. Things happened very quickly. I don't know if I'd recommend this to anyone but it was an okay way to pass a few minutes.
This was a beautifully written novella. While short, it was a good story, well developed and executed. It was the love story of a recluse and a young woman all on her own. There were the villains of the piece. The care and love that developed between the hero and heroine was beautiful to see. I strongly recommend this book.
A quick read, the book is good and brings to the fore the idea that pioneer women were considered old maids if they weren't married by the age of 20. And, if not married, the unmarried woman--according to this book--considered herself rather plain and a spinster when remaining unwed as one neared the age of 30.
As it is a quick read, it also reads as if it were written quickly with the basic idea communicated with a few passages nicely providing good descriptions but mostly just telling a story of an unmarried spinster storeowner being forced to either marry or lose her store, then being attacked by an assailant mistaken for a man that doesn't talk and whom everyone believes to be crazy. While Hallie eventually straightens out the misconception, the story line is related in a straightforward manner where the challenges are reflected in a manner that doesn't beat around the bush or use flowery language to infuse a romance that most likely would never have happened in a manner that other novels in this genre would offer.
When Crazy Jake is badly injured when attempting to assist Hallie, she feels beholden to the man and works to nurse him even though he does not welcome her nor even, at times, be aware that she is there. As time continues, they learn much about each other and will eventually be forced to again defend each other against an unwarranted attack. The story is recommended for anyone liking a good, basic romance in a pioneer setting.
I was very moved by this short, sad, and sweet novella about love finding its way into the damaged hearts of a lonely spinster, and an emotionally crippled widower. The characters were so authentic and well-developed that I just wish it had been a longer story.
I generally don't like novellas as I think the plot and characters are not well developed or they are rushed. I adored this short novel I have read it twice and it is rare that I read any book again.
The heroine feels she is very unattractive and an old maid. The hero has voice problems due to laryngeal injury. He is also grieving the death of his wife and unborn child. They are both viewed as eccentrics by their community. They emphasise with each other from the start of the story but are both too shy and afraid to devlop a relationship. The events of the story brings them together.
There is romance, suspense and action scenes. The characters help and change each other,e.g the hero is motivated to use his voice again in spite of his laryngeal injury. She no longer views herself in a negative way.
Thsi novella reminded me very much of the Little House on The Praire series- but written for adults and in a more modern style. The lifestyle of the time is vividly portrayed along with the climate.
I liked how the title of the book is central to what happens. Many books have a catchy title that has little relevance to the story
